AMBROTYPE

An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. Presented here is an ambrotype with a picture of two gentlemen in civilian Civil War era plain clothes. Their cheeks have been hand tinted with a bit of "rouge", looks like they are blushing! This is a very high quality image with a small spot in the center that does not affect the image of both men. The image is mounted in an beautiful embossed leather union case with single latch closure. A light red velvet pad with embossed crest on the inner verso side of the case protects the glass photograph. The tintype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. Size 2"x 2 1/2". Excellent.
