AMBROTYPE

An ambrotype is an underexposed, underdeveloped, wet-collodion negative on glass that, when viewed with a dark background, appears as a positive image These ambrotype images are done by applying the image emulsion onto a ruby colored glass plate which makes them clear but fragile. Ambrotypes first came into use in the early 1850s. Here is an original ambrotype image of the bust of a Union soldier from the Civil War era. Original hand tinting is still visible on the buttons of the jacket, they have been lightly accented with gold enamel. There is a small light spot on the face of the soldier. The image comes in a beautiful gutta percha union case for display. It is marked on the paper label inside "Genuine Union Case, Improved". It includes a S. Peck patent of 1854 and 1856, and a H. Halverson's patent of 1855. The tintype is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window that is decorated with a canon, a drum and 2 banners. It also has the inscription; "The Union now and forever".The gutta percha union case with a geometric scroll design is in very fine condition, just has a small chip of a few corners. It contains the original felt. Very fine overall, a great Civil War collector's item. Good Ambrotypes of the Civil era are very difficult to find.
