MILLS & ORNDORFF MODEL 1881 INFANTRY .45 CALIBER CARTRIDGE BELT.
Designed by the Mills Woven Cartridge Belt Company. It is a Pattern 1887 (Modified 1881 Model). This stamped, sheet brass belt plate was adopted by the Ordnance Department for issue for the militia. The two-piece plate was made stronger than the Mills 1881 Belt plate. It Is marked with the raised letters "N.Y" indicating their state New York. The buckle is stamped on its hook; ANSON MILLS PAT FEB.1.1881./ T.C. ORNDORFF SOLE MANF./WORCESTER MASS. /U.S.A. The belt is a 50 loop variety in Caiber 45-70. It was part of a contract modification of 7 april 1898, an order for 4000 dark blue belts in cal.45 of a 50 loop variety. Cartridge Belts such as this were worn by the 71st New York, U.S.V., during their campaign in Cuba, which included their assault on the San Juan Heights and Kettle Hill with the Roosevelt’s Rough Riders. "The 71st Infantry Regiment was the first of twelve New York State National Guard infantry regiments that were federalized for service in the Spanish-American War".
