TINTYPE

A tintype, also known as a melainotype or ferrotype, is a photograph made by creating a direct positive on a thin sheet of metal coated with a dark lacquer or enamel and used as the support for the photographic emulsion. Tintypes enjoyed their widest use during the 1860s and 1870s, but lesser use of the medium persisted into the early 20th century. This one is the size known to collectors as the sixth plate image. It means that the image measures approximately 2 5/8 inches by 3 1/4 inch. Here is a 3/4 view of picture of a Civil War soldier in uniform. He wears a forage cap with an infantry insignia and a standard model 1858 model vest with the two button cuff. The image is mounted in an embossed flower design leather union case with a single latch closure. The case is in excellent condition. An unembossed rosy amber silk pad in the inner verso protects the glass and tin photograph. The picture is framed with embossed, highly ornate, decorative gold foil with an oval viewing window. Case in very fine condition, image is excellent.
