SMITH MODEL 1861 CARBINE
#10378. Cal.50 Percussion. Standard 21-5/8" part round/octagonal barrel which retains most of the original blue-brown patina. Frame is mostly dark grey. Wood is in fine condition with light traces of usage. Buttplate is brown grey. A military inspector cartouche "J.H" (Joseph Harris) is stamped on the left side of the stock. The inspector initials "L.F.R." ( Lafayette F. Rogers) is stamped on the left side of the barrel end. Gun is mecanically excellent with a bright shiny bore that has a few spots. A total of 33.950 Smith carbines were manufactured, 21.750 by Massachusetts Arms and 12.200 by American Machine Works. This carbine was made in 1864 by Am.Mach.Works and delivered to the U.S. Army during the Civil War in Feb.1864. A total of 30,362 Smith carbines were purchased by the United States during the Civil War. It was one of the most important Federal Cavalry carbines, and considered to be an accurate and reliable weapon. Union cavalry units known to have carried the Smith carbine include the 3rd West Virginia, 7th and 11th Illinois, 1st Connecticut 7th and 10th Pennsylvania, 6 th and 9th Ohio. The 17th Pennsylvania and Third West Virginia used Smith carbines with great effect in the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863. A good honest Civil War gun in a fine condition.
