SAVAGE MODEL 1861 NAVY REVOLVER

#1506. Cal.36 Percussion. Standard 7-1/8" Barrel. 6 Shot round cylinder. Hinged type loading lever assembly. Flat sided frames with a heart-shaped trigger/lever guard. Gun has a nice brown patina with traces of original blue finish. Some case color visible on hammer. The two piece walnut grips are excellent. The revolver is a civilian model. The standard three-line address and patent markings on top strap are perfect, serial number is located on left grip, on the frame under the right grip and on the bottom of the barrel under the loading lever rammer. Action is perfect. Of the approximately 20,000 Savage “Navy” models produced during the Civil War the US Ordnance Department took delivery of 11,384 of the guns, and the Navy took delivery of 1,126. The balance of approximately 8,500 guns were sold on the civilian market, although most of these revolvers probably ended up seeing action during the Civil War. They were issued to at least 26 US cavalry regiments and were listed among the arms of some half dozen or more Confederate cavalry regiments. Impressive Civil War era gun, in a fine condition! Not easy to find!
