REMINGTON MODEL 1863

#45XX. Caliber 46 Rimfire. Standard 20" Round Barrel. Gun retains about 95% of Original blue finish. About 50% of color case on frame and buttplate. Wood is fine with a some handling and storage marks. Nice inspector's cartouche "CGC" Charles G. Curtis Remington he was a .46 and .50 Caliber Split Breech Carbines Inspector (also inspected Henry Rifles!), vertically stamped on left side of buttstock. Action perfect, bore is mint! These Type I split breech carbines were manufactured by Savage Revolving Arms Co. under sub-contract for Remington to fulfill a U.S. Government contract for 5,000, with completed deliveries from February through April of 1865, per page 178 of "Flayderman's Guide, 9th Edition". These are significant as the first Remington long guns to use metallic cartridges, and the last contract arms supplied to the U.S. government at the conclusion of the Civil War. Approximately 3,600 were repurchased from the government by Remington in 1870 and then resold to the French for use in the Franco-Prussian War, lending to their scarcity on the collectors market today. Features a pinched blade front sight, notch rear sight with folding leaf graduated up to 500 yards, two-line Remington address and patent markings on the upper tang, and saddle bar with saddle ring on the left of the frame. A scarce and desirable martial Civil War gun in very fine condition! Cartridges shown for information purposes only.
